The oddest thing you’ll hear a photographer say

If you’ve read my blogs about authenticity, networking, or personal branding, you’ll know that I don’t tow the line when it comes to societal expectations. Never have done, never will.

This time though, I’m going to disrupt professional expectations. With this one line that you would never expect to hear a photographer say:

I don’t care what you look like.

Now, the quantifiers.

I don’t care what you look like because all I care about is capturing the authentic you.

I don’t care what you look like because I care more about what your perfect client FEELS when they see your personal branding photos.

I don’t care what you look like because in the grand scheme of life, it’s the least important thing about you.

I care about your values, your personality, your drive, what you stand for, and who you REALLY are.

I care about whether or not you can get the job done.

I care about YOU as a human being.

No amount of outstanding imagery can change who you really are.

Photoshop cannot add or remove your personal values.

The application of perfect make-up might cover your self-perceived physical flaws, but your internal flaws make you who you are.

I want to know your flaws. I want to know your story. I want to tell your story in photos.*

Your perfect customer wants to hear your story too.

And you know what they say – a picture paints a thousand words.

So let’s take the best personal branding photos that we can. Let’s think about the best way to communicate your values and your professional expertise. Let’s think about the locations and the props that mean something to you. Let’s get you shining on your website and social media.

You probably should iron your clothes, though

But let’s not worry about what you look like.

Let’s Talk.

By unapologetically being yourself, you give permission for others to do the same.

Whether that’s in person or online, you make other people feel like it’s okay for their authentic selves to show up too.

Who wouldn’t want to work with someone that makes you feel like that?
