There are courses suitable for all levels, and one-to-one tuition is available too.

Subjects covered include:

  • Composition
  • Depth of field
  • Understanding contrast, colour, and luminance

Guided Photography Walks

Taking place all over Leicestershire, these walks are suitable for anyone with any level of interest in photography.

These walks are created for the experience of simply enjoying time in nature and exploring your own creativity.

Along the way I’ll help you review your work and offer feedback on ways to improve your composition skills, using whatever equipment that is available to you.

Experience: Suitable for all levels – complete beginners to professionals.

Equipment needed: Phone camera, DSLR or mirrorless, bridge camera, or compact camera. If it can take a photo – it will do!

Workshop: Getting Started with Photography

This is a half-day workshop taught partially in a classroom, and partially in nearby surroundings.

In the classroom you’ll learn all about the exposure triangle and the only three settings that you need to master on your camera, and then we’ll go for a wander and put that knowledge into practice.

Experience: Suitable for complete beginners and those that want a refresher of the basics.

Equipment needed: Any camera is suitable for this workshop, though you will get more out of it with a camera that has full manual controls (usually a DSLR, mirrorless, or bridge camera, though some advanced phone cameras now offer this too).

Course: Introduction to Photography

This is an eight-session course taught mainly in the classroom, with practical assignments to complete between sessions.

This course will start with explaining the exposure triangle, then teach you about your camera’s light sensitivity, aperture and shutter speed settings. We’ll also look at composition, contrast, colour and luminance, as well as the basics of using a flash.

We will continuously review your work with generous feedback, and offer individual advice tailored towards your own progression.

Experience: Suitable for complete beginners and those that want a refresher of the basics.

Equipment needed: For this course a DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera is needed. If you are unsure if the camera you have falls into one of these catergories, please get in touch and I’ll advise you.

Workshop: Introduction to Adobe Lightroom Classic

In the days of shooting on film, photographers took their negatives to be processed in a lab. Skilled photographers would learn this skill themselves, as it gave them full control of how their finished images would look, including the amount of contrast, exposure level, colour balance, and saturation.

In the digital world we do this on a computer. Despite the rise of competitors, Adobe Lightroom Classic remains the industry standard for post-processing and many of its features are replicated in other programs too.

In this half-day course, we’ll get you started on the basics of Lightroom Classic, including how to make basic images corrections quickly and easily, how to bring back seemingly “lost” details from shadows and highlights, how to use masks, and how to catalogue your images efficiently so that you can find them when you need them.

Experience: Suitable for complete beginners to Adobe Lightroom Classic, although you will need a natural aptitude towards using computers.

Equipment needed: Any camera can be used for this course, but you’ll get the most out of it if you shoot in raw, so you’ll likely own a DSLR, mirrorless or bridge camera. You will also need a laptop and access to the latest copy of Adobe Lightroom Classic. Please note that – confusingly – this is different to Adobe Lightroom and Lightroom mobile.

About the tutor

Having spent some time working in the adult education sector, I have experience working with a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds.

I understand that people learn in different ways and at different speeds, so in order to give each individual the support that they need, all of my workshops and courses have limited capacity.

My teaching ethos – particularly when it comes to anything creative – is that there is never any right or wrong. Our “mistakes” are a key part of our learning experience and should be encouraged. I create an environment of openness and generousity, and encourage learners to support each other too.

Courses and workshops are delivered using structured lesson plans, while photography walks and one-to-one tuition are more fluid, and moulded around the needs of the participants.

Most of all – I believe that learning should be fun! All of my courses, workshops and tuition are highly practical and involve a range of interactive learning experience – there’s no boring book-based study here!
